R2A Dilemma: Is education/job scene better for "average" Indian kids in US or India

$

Hi,

We r family of 4, kids in 8th and 4th now. US citizens.
We did R2I 5 years back, I did not think too much about kids education during R2I.
Now, I am having after thoughts.
I read through some other threads here, but still confused ... please help with your comments.

Question:
My kids are average in academics. They will most probably NOT get into the IITs ... Rather, I do NOT want to plan future thinking they will get into the IITs
Having studied in an average engg college, I know that education offered in such colleges in India are terrible. Main problem was lack of staff. You are on yourself.

Given the above:
For average Indian kids, do they have a better chance to succeed in life in US or India?
- they can get into an average college in US, they will get better education than in an average college in India. I like the teaching system in US - I like the hands on learning in US (as against intensive course work in India). I feel the kid will have more "knowledge" coming out of a US college, than "bookish knowledge" in India ... (please comment, especailly, request people who know both education systems to comment).
- they can get into an average job more easily than in India. Mainly because of the fact that competition is less. Indian kids will generally be above average in academics among US competition. Compare that with India, where my kids will be below average and competing with huge number of people for an average job!!!

(Though I have engg in my mind in the above comments, I feel it applies to any field!) please comment.

Please give your comments supporting or breaking my thought. Both arguments will help me. Hope it will help other R2A/R2I people too

Thank you.

CA RE --- Sell or Keep?

In Bay Area its deja-vu all over again. Real Estate market is red bloody hot, start-ups are going public with crazy valuations, job market is sizzling hot and you are getting hot "stock tips" from everyone. All signs of an impending doom??

So, about 6 years back we bought a condo when RE was at its bottom. For 4 years it was our primary residence and for last 2 years it has been rented out, this year's rent increase is about 12%. Condo is up by about 60-65% in last 6 years and we are less than a year away from losing tax advantage on gains. I am soliciting advises from Bay Area residents on what should we do ----

1. Option 1: Do nothing. Hopefully condo will keep on appreciating. Even if it dips with down-turn, it will again go up eventually (its Bay Area after-all). In next couple of years it will be about a mile of a BART station (with BART coming to South Bay) which may make it appreciate even more.

2. Option 2: Sell it. Save on taxes on gains. USe the money to buy a bigger rental-place.
a. buy where? Tracy, Mountain House, Morgan Hill, Gilroy?

3. Option 3: Sell it. Save on tax on gains. Put the money in stocks (Apple?, Total stock market?). Wait for RE to go through 'correction' and re-enter RE at that time,

4. Option 3: Sell it. Save on taxes on gains. Keep the money in cash. Wait for RE AND stocks to go through 'correction' and re-enter market at that time.

If we decide to sell the condo, we need to do it in next few months or will lose on the taxes on the gain. Suggestions?

R2I rambling - Bay area to Pune

We landed in Mumbai last Wed early morning and came to Pune the same day. Experiencing indian summer after 10 odd years ain't funny.. it's quite hot. Combine it with a mixture of pollution, dust and traffic chaos.... Welcome to india!!
trying to get over the jetlag and adjusting to this new phase.. somehow this time I am not feeling as excited as I used to while visiting india. I guess that's because, right now we are getting accustomed to living here, and setting our lives here while on a vacation you don't have to worry about that at all.
there is a lot to be done: preparing our new apt, buying furniture, our son's school, buying a new car... it's exciting for sure...
we got our cell phone connections pretty fast, within 4 hours the connections were active but the guy in vodaphone store gave us 2G data plan instead of 3G. Had to call back and chide him about that.
School admissions ain't easy this late in the summer. Many schools have turned out son down saying the admissions are full and no more seats left. We are approaching more schools next week.
Our son is okay, he is 4.5 yrs old and enjoying his time with his grandparents, chachas and mamas. He keeps saying he misses Mountain View and his friends, but thats ok, it hasnt even been a week. Wife is a bit in a state of shock coming back to traffic chaos, dust, pollution on the roads. I am trying my best to help herself realign with the way things here are. But her frustometer is at an all time high [emoji14]
Mine is somewhere around 40 to 50% which is not bad.. [emoji2]
Trying to look at the positives and get into our routines as soon as possible. Mental and emotional settle down will take longer and it's okay. For now just going with the flow...
Realizing that vacationing here for 5 weeks and living here are totally different ball games..
I join work on June 1st. Since I have taken transfer through my employer and would be working with the same team, I don't have to worry about that part for now. Although I will be working remotely approximately 70% of the time which is a new thing for me. Since the head office is in Bangalore, have to make sure I don't get sidelined.
Enough of the rambling - I will update more later.....

Need Input..Thanks in advance!

Hi All,

I have been an avid reader of this forum for the last 3 months and have learnt a ton. Thanks much for that! I am planning return to India in October timeframe

A little background about myself, I am a USC and have been here 18 years and originally from Chennai. I am married and have a 10 year old daughter.

Came here to do my MBA at the ripe age of 20 and got into the one more year habit..I am a big fan of India and returning to India is my DNA..
Planning to relocate to bangalore since my wife's family is there and it will make for a softer landing. What has made the decision a little easy is my company is being sold and I will not have a role going forward. Financially , I am in a pretty decent shape...ancestral wealth and I have saved up..

Plan is to not come with a job but to look for one once I get there..Take some time off (3-6 months) , get set with a new home, travel and get assimilated back and then start working....The question is whether the potential employer will look at the break in a bad light and will I not have good opportunities come my way. I will be looking for a finance role at the director level.

I have read up enough , so I think I am coming with the right level of expectation. Wife and daughter are on board as well. Also I am under no false illusion, if the whole India thing does not work out, I am keeping my mind flexible to come back If I need to..

Please feel free to provide any advise/input..Thank you much in advance.

Here is a kwestin for the members of the forum.

How do you deal with with death ?

You would be sad that such a thing had come to a friend, family, an internet forum member from an online community that you frequent. There ain't anyway one could avoid such a thing. It is bound to happen. You would go to a wake, and would be expected to behave appropriately.

I have been to many wakes (in the west) and have visited homes of the bereaved in the east. In the west and in Japan, grieving without reservation is done in private, by the family-- all the wailing, crying, and outbursts are over and done with-- before the family gets out in newly dry-cleaned black outfits to receive the office colleagues, family friends, and the relatives-twice-removed. In Japan, everybody comes to a wake/funeral in black outfits, to stand in a queue at the funeral home, to place a pinch of incense in the tiny hibachi stove in front of the little prayer nook with a framed-photo of the deceased.... and then walk along to hold hands with the chief-mourner (widow-or-widower) for a few seconds and then shuffle off to the general mass of black-outfitted people. Pale faced people, gathered in full black outfits remind me of a great big penguin colony on an antarctic scene.

Anyhow... in the west, people come well dressed to the funeral home, sign the visitor-book,speak to those they know (already) in hushed tones, listen to eulogies and then off they go to some other gathering place to eat sandwiches and talk-- family gossip, office talk etc.. When I am at such events, I fidget, get uncomfortable, and tend to mumble something to whomever is the chief-mourner.... and then sit on pins-&-needles till it is time to get out.

I had also been at the receiving end of the fidgetting, uncomfortable visitors who came to hold my hands and mumble something. On those occasions, I felt like telling them that that we are sorry to have caused them their predicament. Perhaps they are chaffed by too much starch on the collar, or fitted themselves into too tight a dress that was worn 5 years ago to a different funeral ? There could be many reasons for the discomfort of people, including the obvious: That general reminder that everybody has got to go.

How do others on the forum feel about visiting with people who had lost a near relative ? Going to a funeral ? Writing a post when another forum member volunteers the information on some personal misfortune in the loss of a near relative or a spouse ?

Dilemma: Move to Bay Area: Please advise

$

Folks,

After a long while residing in Austin it seems the situation is forcing me to consider another move to Bay Area. I seek advice from the forum members.

1. Austin unit in my company has suffered significantly in recent lay offs and future seems bleak from career progression point of view. Not that I am very ambitious to be upwardly mobile, but this is very distasteful even for me. I see rampant nepotism, cliquish behavior in my current org and it is hard to even make any reasonable progress in career from Austin. Some really incompetent folks in headquarters have managed to change this situation in favor of Bay Area cliques and any possible promotion will have to come from there. Any semblance of fairness, meritocracy is lost in this transition. The word "stuck" might be the most appropriate for my situation. I see myself vegetating in this role till I decide to resign or who knows "let go".

2. I have received kudos and one time huge RSU grant of which last portion is to vest in 2016. It will not be wise to look for another job and leave this money on table. Further, last few years of Austin laid back life style has made me very comfortable and some level of hard work is required to get ready for interviewing.

3. Even after excluding the few one time large RSU awards, my salary and benefits beat Austin potential salary from a local employer big time. A change in job may mean 40% cut in salary.

4. Son attends a great school in Austin and is reluctant to move to Bay Area. Wife likes Austin does not like the idea of moving. After calling Bay Area schools, I realize that my son may not have a same extra curricular activities he gets to do in school (such a violin, swimming, foreign language such as German as a part of curriculum and some schools don't have Talented and Gifted curriculum). All BA schools don't have school bus. I am not certain Cupertino schools are the kind of schools I want to send my son too. Even CUSD schools don't have these options and they seem to be running a rat race of a kind and stress out kids in the process.

5. Moving to BA means paying big taxes on capital gains. A way to stop that bleeding would be to buy overpriced Real Estate and take big mortgage. But RE could go bust like 2008 in next 2 to 3 years and I would lose due to leverage. In case of any adversity such as a job loss, I have financial power to outright pay off the mortgage and buy the property outright in BA. Not buying real estate would mean losing significant chunk in taxes to CA and paying big rent. Moreover, my last RSU vesting will be taxed in CA as income which would have been state tax free in Austin.

6. I have a offer giving 33% raise to transfer to BA. I am reasonably certain that if I put myself to it I may grow in my career in BA. In any case right now it seems BA will provide career options and opportunities that far exceed Austin at least in my company for considerable amount of time in future.

So in a nut shell my dilemma is between my career and education of kids (12 year and 6 years) and planning Real Estate purchase. Please advise. BTW, I have following options:

1. Keep family in Austin, move to BA alone and see if I can wait till I find a good neighborhood where I can buy a property. If does not work out, take a pay cut and find another job in Austin in a year. Keep this time bound to exactly one year.
2. Don't move, swallow the pride and keep working in Austin and get the last RSU grant. Next year plan for a move or find another job. This offer may not be available then. Please advise.

Friends,

I have a couple of offers in Bangalore from Deloitte US India & Oracle IDC & need your help in selecting the better one.

I have around 3 years of work-ex in Identity & Access Mgmt domain ( Enterprise Security ) with a decent Java, SQl & PHP web development skills. I was working with Infosys as a Senior Systems Engineer for the mentioned duration with a CTC of 5.12 LPA.

The offer at Oracle IDC in Bangalore requires me to work in shifts as they have hired me as a part of their product support SR team with no onsite opportunities. The role being offered is of a Software Engineer. The CTC being offered is 8.23 LPA ( Fixed Gross: 7.68 lpa, Company's contribution to PF: 41k, Gratuity: 16k) Additionally, there is an internet/telephone reimbursement of up to 1K per month & free transport to avail. Also, they are offering around 44k as a relocation benefit.

The offer at Deloitte US India office in Bangalore requires me to work in any of the projects based on my skill set & business requirements
(Development/Production Support/Consulting etc.) with slight chances of onsite opportunities in due course of time ( I know it is usually tough to hit an onsite chance at Deloitte & in any case is always a short term one ). The role being offered is of an IT consultant. The CTC being offer is approx 8.89 LPA ( Fixed Gross: 7.5 (Inclusive of company's contribution to PF), Variable Payout: 75k ( Ranging from 0-10% annually ), Medical Reimbursement: 15k annually, Transport Allowance : 2k per month in case I don't use company's conveyance, Joining Bonus: 25K ). Also, they are offering around 40k as a relocation benefit.

I am little confused as I am yet to receive an official offer letter from Deloitte, so should I negotiate a little more? The take home part seems a little less at Deloitte.

Also, I have already accepted Oracle's offer a month ago because I didn't have Deloitte's offer in those days & am supposed to join in another 20 days time.

Please throw in your suggestions. It will definitely help me to make an informed decision.

Thanks in anticipation.

Need advise - IT Director pay package

Hey all, I am looking for some expert advice or opinion here. Since last few years, I am involved with a startup, it was started sometime in 2010 on the side as an exciting opportunity not as a FT job. I was looking for something new and met this guy who was building a team of professionals based on equity plus minimal compensation. Over the years some left some stayed and I stayed with him and became the head of all IT operations and architect team. Now we are in a funding phase and it may fund soon or might be in another 4-6 months. We are a team of 10-12 professionals and I am the one responsible for IT operations, working with architects, developers and designers (though there are 6 at this time), get the prototype up and running, manage the implementation to make sure that it gets tested at one of our test site. So far I am being compensated with some little amount every month.

Now as the funding phase is presumably getting close, I am being offered to take over the IT operations as a Director and let him know my expectations for the pay package + benefits + equity expectations so that once the company is funded, we start working as FT. In the first phase of funding, we are expected to raise 15m-25m and second phase would in the 100m or so, second phase will be in another 2 years or so.

Currently I am working as FT as PM for a medium size company making 160k+bonus etc… Now I am researching what would be a market pay package for a Director level position overseeing the IT Development/Operations and offshore teams. Also how much equity should I look for? What other things I need to be careful about if any?

Thanks all for your suggestions/advise.

Advice on buying a new town home and convert into rental after 2 yrs

$

Hello all,
I am looking for some advice from people who invest in real estate or rental properties. Right now we are renting a town home and pay around 2500 in rent and our original plan was to buy a single family next year. It will cost 600K to 700K in the area I am looking and I want to have atleast 15% down so my mortgage isn't ridiculously high, also I am planning to take a 20 yr loan so I can pay off sooner. But some time in the last week a light bulb turned on and here is my new idea.
Instead of renting another year in order to save more on down payment, I am thinking of buying a town home worth 350-400K so that my mortgage comes around the same amount as my rent. That way I can still save the same money (offcourse I have to put 40-50K down for the town home and that will set me back) and have 15% down in another 2 years, instead of 1 and then buy the single family home that we really want. We can then rent the town home and that way we can have a rental property and a primary residence.
Keeping this in mind, can you please provide insights on what all I should look out for while buying this first town home.
1) I am looking at some new construction in an up and coming sub-urban neighborhood. Will it be hard to rent it out if the house is in a new neighborhood?
2) This neighborhood is also boasting to have an outlet mall close by in the next few years, all the builders are already advertising this. Will this add any value to the house? Either appreciate the value of the house or increase the prospect of rental amount we can get?
3) Also I really want to make use of the low interest rates and relatively low prices this year...everyone is predicting home values as well as interest rates will go up next year, but am I buying in haste?

Can you please provide any other feedback? Does this plan seem like a good one or am I missing something?

My R2I - embracing new experiences!

I am a newbie to this forum but have been lurking around (without registering) for a while... Because I have gained so much through reading everyone's experiences, I thought I could jot down my experience in moving to Chennai from Singapore, which will be happening over the next couple of weeks.

Thought I would share because I think my experience will be slightly different to most of the other members in this forum... as I am 25, unmarried and am *mostly* an NRI brought up outside India :). So while I may not be able to share much about school admissions or buying a house, thought I could share my perspectives on moving to Chennai, working there and making friends in a totally different country! Maybe, this may also be of use to other people my age who are thinking of making the move, whether temporary or permanent :-).

Background

My parents moved to Singapore from India (Andhra area) in '94 and I grew up in Singapore. We are now citizens and my parents are settled happily here. They have the "n+1" mindset to R2I which must be familiar to most of you. Growing up in Singapore, I went to all the different kinds of schools - from local school to one of the Indian schools to an international school. All great experiences! After high school, I really wanted to leave Singapore for various reasons... but primarily being:
  • Classmates from school were all moving abroad for further studies;
  • Singapore felt very small, wanted to experience living abroad
  • Did not feel like going back to "local system" after experiencing international school for the past seven years.

However was convinced by parents to stay in Singapore for college :-). After I graduated - escaped as fast as I could to the US (Durham NC in fact!) and completed my Masters there. Came back to Singapore, worked for about a year and a half and am now moving on to Chennai where I accepted a marketing-related position at a large MNC.

Why not stay in US?

This is the question that most people asked me when I came back to Singapore after studying! There were many many great aspects of US life... some of the things I still miss about the US are:
  • Friendliness of Americans. Was working as a graduate assistant in my university and my colleagues were so friendly, always a smile on their face... Although it is somewhat superficial, it does put you in a good mood when people look happy to see you. Stony faces here in Singapore really make me miss this part of US :)
  • Walmart and Target, used to go whenever I was bored! And who can forget the outlet malls.
  • Beautiful roads and lush greenery which I found so refreshing especially in NC, it was a pleasure to drive. NC is probably my favourite state in the US.
  • This may sound superficial but it is important to me - for the first time in my life makeup was finally available in my skin tone!! Even in India, it is tough for brown-skinned ladies to find affordable foundation in our skin tone :-)!!

However I still wanted to go home really badly - really missed staying with family, had awful winter blues... couldn't find good Indian food and somehow, didn't feel so "starry-eyed" at US as some of my Indian friends did as I was already used to the cleanliness and efficiency of Singapore!! I read somewhere in this forum that the next generation of Indians will all be in the US, and most of my cousins, aunts and uncles are spread across the US too. We don't really have many relatives left in India, even the grandparents do 50-50 with India and US because of grandchildren! But still, I felt like relatives in US were stressed, tired all the time with 1.5h commutes to work (each way) and frozen dinners prepared a week in advance... somehow, didn't want that for myself :(

Funny thing is.. I didn't have too many friends of Indian origin in Singapore but in the US I almost exclusively had Indian friends! Maybe this is just the heart clinging on to familiar things when far away from home...

Being a citizen of Singapore, I did not need a visa to visit the US.. in future if I wanted to work there I could also use the H1B1 visa which had a Singapore quota.. using those rationalisations I said YES immediately when I was offered a job in Singapore a few months prior to my graduation, and came back two days after graduation. I guess absence made the heart fonder for Singapore - however, while it was great to be around my family once more, the initial restlessness that caused me to leave Singapore for US resurfaced once more.

Can Racism displayed overtly be one reason for parents to return to India ?

Quick intro - Living in USA since last 10 years. 2 kids - 8 and 3. Husband an automobile engineer and I am into IT. Planning to move to Pune next year from MI in March/ April. I have been working on/ off with pregnancy breaks, total of 6 years out of 10 so far. House sold. Have got GC not USC.

Concerns
Job - I am currently working, very good job, 5 mins commute. Plan to take break when in India for initial timeframe till we all settle.
Husband - not planning to quit immediately his job. Will stay with us initial 1 month, get us settled and go back, work on job search, find something good and then resign. Since he is auto guy, I am worried about his job prospects and pay package in Pune.
School - mainly worried for my 8 year old who will be going to 4th grade when we land in India. Lil one will be 4 so ok on that front
Mental - as time is approaching I am feeling nervous and not kinda ready for such a big change. At the same time excited too.
Set Up - Since my husband will be only 4-5 weeks with us initially, need to work on setting up house quickly. Appliances and basic furniture, car may be. Need inputs on this.

Questions
What pre-planning can be done so we can quickly buy appliances and set up house
How easy will it be for me to live with 2 kids and settle things around the house after husband leave.
Have in-laws to help they will stay with me, parents in same town but due to health issue cant be much help.
Feeling anxious and worried.
